Finally...it took 3days, literally, but I think I'm getting the hang of it. Shout out to Destiny and Brittany for the insight. And with that being said, I would like to dedicate my 1st post to the state of hip hop in 2010. Also mixed in here somewhere will be different list of artist that I listen to.
As the year is coming to a close, I think that hip hop has had its best year so far from the year 2000 until now. This year alone the music has gotten better due to what I believe to be the fans reconnecting themselves with Good Music (NO Kanye). Like Chuck Inglish said, "yall disrespectin beats, better learn how to rap, cause these kids now a days way more concerned with facts" quoted from Good Afternoon off the TackleBox mixtape. I think that listeners are gravitating more towards artist who can deliver lyrically but aren't gimmicks.
And this is where I get into how I separate my artist and how I listen to music.
My taste of music has changed over the last year. I've always been into what an artist is saying lyrically but now I'm into if you about what you talking bout. If you notice im more into artist that I can addapt to.
1st you have the lifestyle/fantasy rap genres...I was going to separate the two but then I had to think: If you can
Music that you listen to and can relate to it gives you the lifestyle genre. An example to me would be J. Cole. when I hear him rap I always catch myself saying, "damn, I feel that shit." When you have had similar situations occur in your life, then you can understand where the artist is coming from.
My lifestyle artist include: Cole, Wale, Dom Kennedy, Curren$y (in a stoner mentality), Wiz (also in a stoner mentality), can't forget about Chip Tha Ripper, and Big Sean, and as far as groups I can include The Cool Kids and Pac Div.
-all these artist stay true to themselves (my opinion) not looking to be who they aren't.
Then you have your fantasy rap genre. This gives you all the music that you listen to that isn't realistic to your life personally, but its appealing to the ear. So for example, when you hear somebody talking about flippin' brick after brick and you know the song word for word like you his co-pilot but ain't never seen half an once in your life, this creates your "fantasy rap". Because it's appealing to the ears and from you watching Paid N' Full and Scarface a few hundred times combined, you can visualize what the artist is talking about. That was just one example.
-my fantasy/lifestyle rappers include: Drake(he got bars on deck but I can't feel everything he says), Lil Boosie, Jeezy, Yo Gotti(best lyrical 'trapper'-if that makes sense), Rick Ross, Pusha T.
But I put those two genres together because they are interchangeable. What you cant relate to becomes a fantasy and what you can is a lifestyle.
Then you have your lyrical genre: This includes Lupe Fiasco, Jay-Z(I shouldn't have him in here because he don't have anything to prove anymore), Kanye West, Eminem, Lil Wayne(when he want to), Lloyd Banks(he got word play in my opinion-check out Hunger For More 1 and 2 then talk to me), etc.
You also have your party genre. This includes Roscoe Dash, Travis Porter, Soulja Boy, T-Pain, etc. Songs that mainly get spins when its party time. These are the same songs that you cant listen to all day everyday unless this is the genre that suits your life. But me personally, I feel like these artist can only go so far. Travis Porter reminds me of the Ying Yang Twins in the early 2000's. The word play is never going to make you rewind the track to hear what they said, but it will put you in a great "pre-gaming" situation.
*Sidenote: Fab is on this list but I don't know where to put him. Most likely in my lyrical section cause he got bars.
All in all, I feel like the new cast of artist in hip hop are taking it in the right direction. The older faces are getting hip to whats going on right now and transitioning accourdingly. 2011 is shaping up to be a successful year based on the direction that things are headed now.
-Also I could of touched on all the bull shit in hip hop but its not worth the thought. Because the people how particitpate in those flawed scemes can only go so far in my book.
If there is an artist that you like that isn't on any of my list, there might be a few reasons: either I don't give a shit, they didn't come to mind at that time, or they don't fit in my list. If you still can't come up with a reason than lean more towards me not giving a shit.
Comment on the post. All feedback is good feedback
Once again these are my opinions. If you have your own then bring me some facts and we can debate.
